The ability of salicylic acid to exfoliate the stratum corneum makes it a good agent for peeling. In particular, its comedolytic property turns the salicylic acid into a useful peeling agent for clients with acne.

It is considered a keratolytic agent thanks to the role of salicylic acid as a demolytic agent because it is able to disrupt cellular junctions rather than breaking or lysing intercellular keratin filaments. Salicylic acid as a peeling agent has numerous indications, including acne vulgaris, melasma, photo-damage, freckles, and lentigines.
